A walk in Bhutan
I have visited the mysterious, magical, mountain Kingdom of Bhutan three times and I look forward to my next visit, when I hope to go beyond Bumthang and explore as far as Trashigang in theeast.
On my most recent visit, in April 2010, I was looking for day walks rather than lengthy treks as I believe many visitors to Bhutan might not want to spend their nights under canvas and might prefer the comforts of an hotel after a day's exhilarating walking in the beautiful Himalayan foothills.
I have composed an itinerary called 'Walking with the Thunder Dragon' and this can be found on my website http://www.ellisonroberts.co.uk along with several other Bhutan holiday ideas.
Of course the most well known of Bhutan's short walks is probably the trail to the Tiger's Nest monastery viewpoint. This walk begins near Paro and ascends steeply through woodland to emerge at a viewpoint from which can be seen the spectacular Taktsang Monastery, also known as Tiger's Nest, because, according to legend Guru Rinpoche flew there from Tibet on the back of a tigress.
It is a steep trail and the ascent takes around 90 minutes, but it isimmenselyrewarding as the views from the viewpoint at 10,240ft are spectacular indeed and the scented mountain air is refreshing.
The best place to stay nearby is the Zhiwa Ling Hotel. This stylish, comfortable hotel is the only Bhutanese owned hotel to be given a 5 star rating by the Bhutan Tourism Council.
