ADHD Coaching - Could This Be the Answer to Help You Get Back in Control?
Most ADHD adults I know have great talents, intelligence and creativity
. They can be funny and entertaining and they can be totally infuriating when they just fail to deliver on an appointment, a date, a phone call or a simple request. Organisational skills? Well, that certainly is a problem. Maybe ADHD coaching is the answer. Let's see.
When we get to know ADHD and began to understand some of the problems, every piece of the jigsaw seems to fit into place. Jut think of an ADHD brain with faulty wiring connecting all those brain chemicals from working like clockwork! Just a slight problem. Some other people have likened this slight defect to a rather weak cell phone signal. They have problems with connecting the message so inattention, lack of concentration and general distraction all get in the way.
So, we have a problem. Can ADHD coaching fix it? Can an ADHD coach really help us to get to grips with setting goals, action plans, time management, cutting multi tasking and meeting deadlines. Certainly the corporate world is no help in its rather ambiguous attitudes. On the one hand, multi tasking is seen as a plus but when it comes to missing deadlines, the corporate monster turns into a rather angry bear!
So ADHD coaching is here to help us meet goals and challenges. A really good coach can help us to maximize our considerable talents and help us make up the shortfall caused by our minor individual difficulties and problems. That is the goal we should be working on with our coach.
How do we select a good coach and what should we insist that he or she does? Up to now, there are no official qualifications or credentials for an ADHD coach. This is very strange but nobody has yet got round to it. Maybe our legislators have been busy with the recession?
A coach will soon help us to set up routines. This could be for taking medication or simply performing regular tasks at work. He or she should also be able to help us set realistic goals and go through with us the action points we need to achieve those. He will help us in prioritizing and also techniques when we want to procrastinate! Then there are aspects of time management and other techniques which can halve the workload and save loads of time.
There are private organisations who train coaches. The best way is to get a recommendation from a trusted person, like your doctor or therapist or some personal recommendation from a friend so that you know the person is serious. After that it is just a question of assessing if the
ADHD coaching is helping you to achieve your goals and you feel more comfortable in your work environment. It is only then that you can judge that you are going to get back in control and that you will never look back.
