ASTM E162 – is it better than its predecessor?

Standards are a hard thing to develop, but their goal is to make our lives easier and safer

. The more materials or products we purchase that live up to the standard conditions imposed by ASTM, the more we will be sure about the choices we make. How they reach their outcomes is an activity that only they know, but the rest of the companies have to abide by their rules.

The American Society for Testing and Materials is an organization that only focuses on developing new standards for all sorts of materials, products or services. They conduct their activities on a world wide plane, supporting committees from all over the world in order to achieve and develop new standards. Up until this point they have about twelve thousand standards, but the number is growing.

This organization has an experienced background that dates back to the end of the nineteenth century. Their original goal was to eliminate the faults in the rail road industry. Their first task was to come up with a standard for the steel used in the manufacturing process of the rails, due to many breaks that slowed the very fast progress or the rail road industry in those days.

From that point the organizations has enjoyed a lot more progress. One of the main reasons why today's companies found world-wide can enjoy the fruits of their labor is due to the diversification of their activities throughout their lifespan.

One of their goals and developments we will talk about in this article is meant to save the lives of people throughout the world. It is called the ASTM E162 fire testing standard, and it is meant to outline the requirements building materials must meet in order to be safe.

This standard is not the only development of its kind, because fires were a problem ever since mankind started using burning wood inside their homes in order to generate heat in the colder seasons. One little error and the entire home would perish in flames.

But is the ASTM E162 fire testing method better than its predecessor, the ASTM E84? In order to address this problem, we would have to take a look at both methods and determine the advantages and disadvantages of each one in particular.

First of all, the outcomes of both fire testing methods are the same, to determine which materials ignite harder, which ones burn slower, which ones support flames less and so on. Considering the outcomes, both methods are the same.

The process involved in the ASTM E162 is slightly more comfortable that its predecessor. First of all, the E84 uses a big sample of the material, measuring 20 inches in width and 25 feet in longitude, whereas the newer method requires four samples measure 6 by 18 inches.

When it comes to the costs involved, the newer fire testing method is cheaper, because it doesn't involve the machinery in the E84. The outcomes are the same, the materials are smaller and easier to handle and the costs are lower, which make the ASTM E162 the better method.
