Anniversary gifts have become standardised over the years
, and gifts often depend on the length of time that people have been married. There are many reasons to celebrate each year that you are married. Being married can be very challenging and stressful. You must deal with temptations outside of the marriage, parents, children, friends, finances, health, employment, and other factors can get in your way. There is no perfect anniversary gift. There are guidelines to follow to help you a little in your search.
The anniversary gifts list started in Europe. There were only two anniversaries that were worthy of gifts at this time. At 25 and 50 years a silver and golden wreath was given to the wife. Two more years were added during the Victorian age. These were the 60th and 75th year, which were celebrated with diamonds. In 1992 a book was published with the list of anniversaries that deserved special gifts. These were for the 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 50, and 75.
Most people celebrated these years according to statistics. They were very worthy of anniversary gifts, and the most popular to buy for. This book went on to add that gifts should be added for years 1-15 and then every 5 after that. In 1937 the National Retail Jeweller Association stepped in and listed a material that was to symbolise anniversary gifts for every year a couple was married. This was only for 1 and 20 years at first. It was believed that in order to make it to 20 years successfully, the first 10 must be very stable among a married couple.
There are modern and traditional ideas for anniversary gifts. Paper symbolises the first year of marriage. This is meant to be a sign that although the couple is together, they are still in a fragile state. The second anniversary is symbolised by cotton. This represents prosperity and durability. By three, the gifts have moved to leather. This symbolises that a marriage is much stronger than the 2 previous years. Leather can be smooth and rough. The more it is worked on the smoother it becomes. This symbolises perfecting a marriage.
The fourth year of marriage is symbolised by linen anniversary gifts. This is intended to represent that the burdens on your life are getting lighter and cooler. Wood marks the fifth-year anniversary. This is a sign that the marriage ha strength and will last. Six-year anniversary gifts are based on iron. Iron is strong, but will often rust. You have to work on your marriage to keep it strong. Wool comes in during the seventh anniversary. Wool is very thick and resistant. Couples are reminded not to step outside the comforts of the marriage.
These are just a few of the important years, which have a product of symbolism. This is why anniversary gifts are based on these items. It is meant to bring meaning. It helps to remind a couple that although they are strong, they always need to work at the relationship to remain that way. It also points out how a couple has grown.
