About Magnesium Composite
A composite is the combination of two materials to form one material that still contains traces of the two parts. Composites are formed to bring the best features of two materials together in order to best serve a purpose. Think of plywood. It is a single sheet used in building, but is clearly comprised of more than one material. You can see pieces of each material used to create the plywood in the single sheet. Metal composites work the same way.
Composition
Composites have two primary components that are required to make the combination work. They are a matrix, also called a binder, and are a reinforcement. The binder is usually a plastic resin or glass fibers (fiberglass) that is used to bind the metal reinforcement fibers together. A metal, like magnesium, is used as a reinforcement because of its strength. Fine threads of metal are needed to perform this role. Carbon fibers are also used in magnesium composites as an additional strengthener and light weight.

Magnesium composites are lighter than the alloys, but also have great strength that is complimented by the carbon fiber or fiberglass used as a binder. Composites are usually stiff, which helps the strength and makes composites great for use in protective capacity, as Kevlar for example. Composites also have better heat resistance and much better corrosion resistance than plain fiberglass or magnesium alloy. The structure of the composite makes the material more resistant to cracking and breakage as well.
Uses
One of the most prevalent uses for magnesium based composite materials is in the automotive industry, aviation, and aerospace. Composites are molded to create the outer shell of the carfenders, bumpers, door panels, etc. they are also used in boats because of their resistance to water corrosion. These materials also work well for the newer, lighter-weight vehicles created to run on the electric and hybrid fuel cells.
Composite materials are but one of the many uses for the metal magnesium. Inthe ways described aboveand others, the once sparingly used magnesium metal is quickly becoming a vital part of daily life and the manufacturing industry.
