About Taking That Post-baby Weight Off
During the course of pregnancy, it is normal for women to gain up to 50 pounds
. While much of this weight drops off on its own in the months following delivery, in part of because of the intense calorie-burning "workout" that is breastfeeding.
But if you aren't breastfeeding and/or you have had previous pregnancies, along with a number of other influencing factors, you are unlikely to lose weight so easily. This can dampen the joy you feel as you welcome your new addition.
So what are your options when it comes to shedding that unwanted flab so that you can be at your best for your baby? Well, I am going to give you some advice, but remember that you need to be flexible in order to discover the method that is going to work best for you.
First of all, get you and your little family back into healthy eating habits as quickly as possible if you lapsed during pregnancy. Many women tend to justify indulgences because of cravings and that old saying that you're "eating for two."
But making an honest effort to reestablish a routine of eating nourishing meals and snacks, complete with whole grains, fiber, fruits, and veggies, you will be setting a positive example for any older children you might have and get into a lifestyle that will be beneficial for your little one as they age.
We all know how crucial exercise is to getting the healthy curves we crave, but remember that your body is still healing from a tremendous ordeal, so don't undertake anything more strenuous than walking (and keep that to a minimum) for the first six to eight weeks--or longer, depending on your doctor's recommendation.
Once you can get started, it would be wise to invest in a jogging stroller so that you can get out there every morning or evening and chisel out a workout with your infant right along with you for the ride. Or, if running is not your thing, you may want to investigate local gyms that offer daycare options. But be careful--babies still have developing immune systems, so exposing them to a flock of other children all at once may put them at risk.
Looking into compact exercise equipment from a store that sells gently used sports goods would also be wise because then you can conveniently exercise when baby is down for a nap without even leaving your home.
Some women, particularly those that had struggle with weight predating their pregnancy, need to take more intense measures to induce weight loss. Some might toy with surgery but don't know how it will affect their future plans.
For such women the Los Angeles Lap Band procedure is their best bet, as it allows for adjustments in the event that they want to get pregnant again. It is more flexible and even reversible.
Be patient with yourself. You had almost ten months to gain the weight that you did, so it may take just as long--or longer--to take it off. But don't worry--it will happen in time.
