About " Buschen" and "Keschtn" in the beautiful South Tyrol
, Italy
Chestnuts, vine, and hiking, these three comprise the fifth season of South Tyrol: "Toerggelen" is one of the most significant customs of the country and may be also one of the most enjoyable. After extensive hiking through the colourfully colored landscape of autumn, one stops off in one of the quaint "Buschen"-inns and relishes the young or sweet wine. Chestnuts, bacon, and other specialties of South Tyrol are served with it.
The name "Toerggelen" is not derived from "torkeln" (staggering), as one may playfully assume, because of the wine consumption connected with this custom, but is derived from "Torculum," in South Tyrol simply called "Torggl," which is the grape press in the wine-making cellar. From the beginning of October until the beginning of Advent (the four weeks before Christmas) it is a custom in South Tyrol to hike, then eat and drink in the "Buschenschank". This old custom of the wine growers begins, as soon as the grapes are harvested, and their juice is secured in heavy barrels. In old times the wine growers hung a juniper bouquet on the door, as a sign that the young wine could now be tasted. The juniper bouquets, in South Tyrol called "Buschen," then changed the wine grower's farm for a few weeks into a so-called "Buschenschank". Still today the wine grower's "Schank"-inns at "Toerggele"-time are called this way, and invite for a delightful stop off.
Hiking and Toerggelen are two inseparable components. If you think that this tradition is solely about drinking and feasting, you are greatly mistaken. If you want to do the "Toerggelen" the right way, the entire holistic enjoyment is understood, hiking through the enjoyable autumn landscape as well as feasting and food relishing. A typical specialty served during Toerggelen time is chestnuts. In autumn the brown autumn fruits, called Keschtn in Southern Tyrol, break their spiny protective shells open and decorate the hiking routes. One of the most beautiful hiking trails in this context is certainly the Keschtnweg, a trail that begins at lake Vahrner, leads past Brixen along the slopes of the Eisack Valley over the Rittner Summit, and all the way down into the valley basin of Bolzano to the Bilderburg castle Runkelstein. Chestnut forests extend along the marked hiking trail, which runs through lush meadows and colourfully mixed forests. One hikes about 1,5 hours from castle Runkelstein along the chestnut road to Ebnicherhof in Oberbozen. The walking trail is marked.
