Abuse Of Power In Trayvon Martins Case

Abuse of power is an official misconduct, consisting in the commission of an unlawful act

, done in an official position, which affects the performance of official duties. This was one of the charges the four police officers who have beaten Rodney King twenty years ago, had to face. The vicious beating of the black motorist at the end of a high speed pursuit was caught on tape and the case ended up in a courtroom. However, despite the evidence, the three white and one Hispanic police officers were acquitted by the jury of all charges.

What followed turned out to be the most destructive riot in modern American history. At the end of the six days protests 53 individuals lost their lives, thousand were injured and property damage of around $1 billion has been reported. His was the cost of American citizens showing they will not tolerate abuse of power remaining unpunished.

Unfortunately around the twenties anniversary of the L.A. Riots another worrying incident occurred which raises many questions about what have Americans learned from the tragic events of April 1992. In Sanford, Florida a 17 years old Afro-American teenager was shot to death by a neighborhood watch leader George Zimmerman. The crime had no obvious reason, as Martin was unarmed and apparently acting peacefully.

Many community members and right activists nationwide made comparisons between the cases. Their disagreement towards the situation grew even more when Zimmerman pleaded not guilty and was released from jail in exchange of a $150,000. They believe the defendant represents a public threat and should have been kept behind bars.

The L.A. criminal defense attorney representing Zimmerman thinks differently. According to him there are considerable differences between the two cases, and there is no prove that his client performed an abuse of power. In fact that charge does not exist in the Zimmerman case. He will be charged with second degree murder and if found guilty he will face a prison time of minimum 19 years. But until then he is kept under permanent police supervision, his location being unknown. These measures where needed as officials fear possible vigilante actions.
