Accident Prevention In Double Storeys
Unlike homes with just one level, double storey homes certainly have more advantages as a direct result of their sheer size
. This may be the very reason why you, like many others, have decided on living in such a home. However, just like anything else, a two-level home also has its disadvantages. Ironically, the disadvantages of the double storey home are in fact some of the advantages of the single storey home. A home with two floors is definitely much harder to maintain. However, this is not the only disadvantage that such a home has.
You can never get rid of the staircase if you have a two-level dwelling unit; and this happens to pose a great risk to its occupants. The risks can be much higher if you have children in the house. If you have all day to make sure that they're safe in going up and down the staircase, this wouldn't be such an issue. Unfortunately, putting yourself on 24-hour guard duty at the foot of the staircase is not a practical solution.
Toddlers and children who are still in their most playful years are the most susceptible to have accidents on the staircase. The reason for this is that kids of that age bracket consider the staircase as a fun place of their
double storey home. You can't blame them though; since kids do have the talent of making a toy or mode of transportation of anything in the house. They can easily imagine themselves as adventurous pirates as they ascend and descend the staircase.
Scolding your kids and warning them about playing on the staircase may work for a brief period of time. As soon as they find out that you're no longer looking, they'll proceed with their adventures and put themselves at risk of accidents again. A prudent thing to do is to make a separate room dedicated for your kids' playful escapades. A double storey home should be large enough to provide you with an extra space for that purpose.
The only consolation is that this problem occurs only at a certain stage when your kids have not yet tried videogames. The moment that they do, they may find that playing on the computer or on their personal gaming gadgets is of much greater interest to them than playing on the stairs. The irony is that you may find it hard to tell them to get anything you forgot upstairs. Nevertheless, you shouldn't be complacent. You still have a staircase and accidents can still occur.
The ideal thing to do is to make sure that accidents are less likely to happen on the staircase. This can be done by applying some simple protective measures. You shouldn't apply too much wax on the steps. Doing so will make them slippery. A better idea would be to put carpet-like material on every step so that slipping is prevented. Once in a while, you have to check if there's anything on the steps that can cause an accident. This is truly an additional chore that is part and parcel with owning a double storey home.
