According To West Ridge Academy 3 Must Do Communication Tips With Teens
Communicating effectively with your teen is paramount to having a relationship with your teen that you cherish according to West Ridge Academy.
Most people tend to think that communication is all about expression. This is true, however listening is the most important part of good communication skills.
Most parents find they start getting along better with their teen and children better when they apply these skills.
1. Make Them Feel You Are Giving Them All Your Attention
They must have all your attention.
Multi-tasking is a problem in communication because is says we are not completely interested. Stopping what you're doing communicates importance to your teen.
This is a great way to show respect and respect is typically reciprocated.
2. Getting The Details Shows You Care
The secret is reading between the lines to understand what they are saying. Often teens leave out the details to test you interest level. Getting a teen to engage in heart felt, open, communication is an acquired skill and important to being a successful parent.
Here's a scenario: "My teacher bites!"
Parent: "Really, you can't mean that."
Teen: "Really, I do mean it!"
Parent: "I don't want to hear you talk like that about your teacher." You can't really hate him.
Teen: "In fact I hate all teachers!" And it just keeps going.
Notice the different using the techniques. Teen: "I hate Mr. Jones."
Parent: "Whoa that isn't like you." Tell me why you feel that way?
Teen: "Cause some of the kids didn't do their homework so now we are have the test early."
Parent: "I think I would be upset about that too."
Teen: "It's totally not fair, I want to go to the mall tonight. Now I have to cancel my plans and study. She has no clue!"
The key is the the parent keeps listening.
Given the chance the teen communicated his feelings and was validated by his parents.
Now the wise parent listened to their teen express themselves. Its not about agreeing with them or control as it letting them be free to feel how they feel. No one can control how another person feels not even parents. Although we can not determine how are kids feel, it is important to teach them parameters about what is appropriate.
Positive expression of how you feel is important to good mental health.
3. Don't Ask Yes No Questions
Ask your teen questions and enjoy the results of good communication. Encourage them to share more than just and "yes" or "no".
In the prior example you could say, "What could you do to help your her to change her mind about?"
