Accountants Need to Decide Where They Want to Work
Accountancy is a popular career that attracts people because they can work in almost any environment
. Everyone needs an accountant, whether it's a local SME, a multinational corporation, the local radio station, a record label or a car manufacturer, so there are usually plenty of
accountancy jobs around.
You can choose to work for one company, or specialise in a certain skill and deliver that for numerous organisations.
In fact, it's a widely reported fact that accountants in the UK earn 55% more than those working in France. Whilst this sounds like fantastic news for Britain's accountants, and it is, this is often balanced out by the expectation that they will work longer hours.
Accountants supply the information that businesses and organisations need to asses the their financial situation. This involves completing tasks such as preparing financial statements and recording business transactions.
Due to the plethora of accounting specialities, it's not always possible to receive an accounting qualification and walk into a job. More often than not it's preferential if candidates for accountancy vacancies have proven experience in their chosen field.
It can be daunting deciding which type of accounting job to go for, but accountants have many transferable skills so perhaps it's more important to decide where to work. This could be working for a public accounting firm, where a group of accountants provide their services to businesses, individuals and the government. This is often popular because it is a fantastic grounding for future career ambitions.
Another option is to work for the government, which involves preparing budgets, tracking costs and analysing government initiatives, which many people like because it offers good career progression opportunities.
Alternatively, if you want more dynamic work with good prospects, working for a corporation offers this.
You could decide to be an independent accountant, but you'll have to rely on generating your own business and it leaves you vulnerable, especially during a recession when work might be slow.
