Acne - A Sign Of Something Else?
Acne is not just a "privilege" teenagers have but a sign of a something else
. In order to treat acne you have to both control the symptoms and address the underlying cause. We can treat acne using customized facial and peel treatments that will:
"Control the bacteria
"Soothe the inflammation
"Remove blackheads and blocked pores
"Reduce the thickening skin that results in "underground" pimples
What we cannot do is treat the hormonal condition that results in the overproduction of sebum in the first place. Usually with acne clients we work closely with their medical professionals to make sure that these hormonal issues are being addressed in conjunction with a treatment plan.
Home care is critically important for clients suffering from acne. You can go to the dentist and have an amazing teeth cleaning, but you still go home and brush and floss, right? A home care regime will be custom designed to make sure that the client is maintaining their results at home between treatments. This regime needs to be easy, so it can be done on a regular basis, and effective in order to maintain treatment results.
ACNE SCARS
Acne very definitely leaves scars, and we are very effective at treating the dark or red marks left behind by acne lesions. We use a progressive, rather than aggressive approach to scar removal. The typical treatment plan involves a series of chemical peels that gradually go up in strength. Each time we get closer to the melanocytes that are causing the pigmentation, and usually by treatment 4 or 5 the pigmentation lifts. In the meantime, the treatments are controlling the symptoms of the acne, and the breakout pattern is lessening as the series progresses.
This being said, there is another type of scarring that we cannot fix in the treatment room. The crater type scar that results from collagen damage at the dermal level cannot be fixed by aesthetic treatments. This type of scar can only be fixed under general anesthesia using a procedure called dermabrasion.
Dermabrasion and microdermabrasion are two very different procedures. For dermabrasion the skin is made smooth again by using an implement that resembles a steel file to sand the skin back to smooth. As one can imagine, this procedure is very painful, and must be done under anesthesia. It usually takes 3 weeks for the epidermal tissue to grow back, but it absolutely works, and pock-marked skin can be fixed! Microdermabrasion very gently sands of the excess dead layers of the skin resulting in increased smoothness of the skin. There is no downtime with microdermabrasion, and it is very effective on epidermal problems. We can always determine in a consultation whether a client"s scarring is epidermal or dermal in nature.
