If you could take the wave at exactly half cycle (the lowest part of the wave) and fill it with a copy of its self moved backward exactly half cycle that you would essentially create a near smooth water surface. This is the basic theory behind active noise canceling.

As time goes by, new applications for this now emerging technology will be used in everyday devices. Just imagine it's use in apartments and homes. Scientist are now at work on putting this technology to work in new products now under development. We could only wonder what they are going to create in the future. For now, we're not going to complain, because we have some really awesome headphones and devices that we can use in order to cancel unwanted noise out. Gone are the days when we had to stick things in our ears so we could avoid hearing things that we did not want to hear in the first place.
