The Outer Banks of North Carolina are well known for providing an excellent fishing experience. Many travel to the Outer Banks for no reason other than to cast their line in the areas waters and Hatteras Island is one of the best places to do so. During the fall, red drum, striped bass, and blue fish are popular catches, while the summer brings in flounder, trout, sea mullet, and pompano. Hundreds of blue marlin, white marlin, and sailfish are caught in Hatteras waters during late spring to early fall. Depending on the charter you choose there is also a chance to catch Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, yellowfin tuna, mahi-mahi, grouper, sea bass, and cobia. You may find you want to spend a lot of time at the beach, but don't forget to explore the rest of the island. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse has warned sailors of Hatteras dangerous Diamond Shoals or shallow sandbars since 1868. A journey up the lighthouse's 248 steps ends in spectacular views of the island. With about 1000 known shipwrecks due to the Diamond Shoals, the area is known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic. The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum as well as the Frisco Native American Museum are great places to explore while on Hatteras Island.
