Add A Touch Of Glamour To Your Kitchen Without Breaking The Bank
Everyone today seems to desire a great looking kitchen
, but the cost and stress are horrendous. So is there an alternative that delivers a result that "seems" nearly as good? There is and the way to set about this is to start at the finish. Leave the place you're starting from and check up on kitchen displays and glossy magazines for ideas that appeal to you.
The purpose is not to clone an existing designer look, but more to get a feel for what's attainable these days and what design elements particularly appeal to you. But one aspect you're certain to spot is that almost without exception, the kitchens you most like are 1) devoid of redundant clutter and 2) beautifully lit.
But not having extraneous stuff around the place is not the same as Spartan minimalism. Most kitchens benefit from having utensils, books, decorations and assorted small appliances strategically on display. It's the stuff that doesn't belong, or that could be put away but hasn't been, that is distracting and spoils the appearance.
On the lighting side of things, step outside the kitchen and into a TV or film set. The point is that these seem to the viewer to be, say, a modern office, or a pleasant bedroom or whatever the designer wants you to see. In reality they are normally inexpensive chipboard with a quick paint job - the lighting is what makes them appear so much more. Apply this logic to your kitchen.
So to make it "look" like you spent a lot on reconstructing your kitchen you need to initially sort the space out (de-clutter and order things to enhance the space), and second attend to the lighting. Be honest, how prehistoric precisely are your light fittings anyway? If you can name a decade other than the current one then it's time to be surprised by what's on offer nowadays.
The thing is, even if you only want to just update existing fittings, there is so much more diversity nowadays. If your pendant lights, for example, date back to the previous millennium (or decade if you prefer) then they're making your kitchen look dated just by being there. And if you haven't got pendant lights suspended above a table or island then you might want to think about adding some.
Effective lighting is all about utilizing a number of fittings designed for very specific roles, rather than relying on a few central lights that try to do the whole job. With the availability of products such as flexible LED strip lighting it's now simple to fit lights beneath cabinets to provide counter-top task lighting, or to run then around the plinth to create accent lines.
LED lamps are also low power, run cool and produce a very crisp light so you can not only replace any halogen spots you may have but also add lights in otherwise difficult locations. With LED it becomes much easier to highlight certain features, lift a gloomy spot and create original effects using reflections off various surfaces.
