Addiction Treatment Regains The Political Spotlight

For many years, the drug wars have created havoc on both Mexican and United States soil

. In a recent meeting between the first ladies of each country, the topic of discussion turned to the family and community requirements needed to provide drug addiction treatment and stop abuse in both nations. Meanwhile, new technologies and sciences are being discovered to help combat the addiction of any type, and depending on their success rates, may find their way to an addiction treatment center.

Most U.S. citizens blame the rampant drug trade on the cartels of Mexico, while many Mexicans blame the success of the cartel on the vast number of consumers to be found in the U.S. While such blame can be found on both ends of this supply and demand, the arguments have led to bitter relations between the two governments over the subject. However, when Michelle Obama met with Margarita Zavala on April 14th, the two first ladies had no qualms with turning the conversation to early prevention and drug addiction treatments.

Even with the short time of the discussion, both women brought to light their interests for involving family and communities as a part of their solution to the problem, and many other issues that adolescents face on both sides of the border. Addiction treatments look to become a major topic of discussion as the Obama administration intends to roll out their policies for reducing illegal drug use in the U.S. and the repercussions are expected to affect Mexico and other foreign nations, though the change will be in a positive manner.

In addition to this, newly researched methods for providing addiction treatment to those who face substance abuse problems are being presented to treatment providers at the National Institute on Drug Abuses upcoming conference. Traditionally, researchers and treatment providers have little to no chance to work together in developing and implementing new cures at an addiction treatment center, but the Blending Conference allows those in the substance abuse rehab field to get firsthand experience and information regarding upcoming treatment plans.

Addiction treatments and drug regulation policies have each undergone a significant number of changes over the last 50 years, and those changes do not look to be slowing anytime soon. Thankfully, with the current presidential administration working to repair relations with Mexico, and researchers constant work towards improving treatment methods, the fight for a healthy America appears to be back on track. In other words, those who need addiction treatment can get it, and those who are not addicted can avoid it.
