Adding The Illusion Of Space Through Room Design

Just because your home has small rooms does not mean that you have to feel cramped

. There are many things that you can do to create the look and feel of more space in your home. If you put even a little thought into your space, you can create a space that is not only comfortable to live in, but it will be quite functional as well.

Keep Organized

In any small space it is incredibly important to be organized. As soon as you lose your grip on organization, your space will seem to shrink in size, and that is because clutter physically and visually fills a space and makes it feel smaller. When a room is filled with clutter there is not place for your eye to rest, and there is very likely no place for you to rest either. So if you are decorating a small space, do not display a lot of little accessories. If you do have treasures that you want to display, try assembling them in a large grouping to make a single, big statement in the room. You will also want to try to incorporate as much storage into the space as possible, so try to find furniture that can double as storage. Use decorative baskets and bins on shelves to add additional storage to your space while keeping it uncluttered.

Open Space is Important

Keep your space as open as possible. While you do not want to line your furniture up around the edge of the room, you do not want to have to trip over it to get through your room either. So when you are arranging your furniture, make sure to leave some generous walkways through the room to make it feel larger.

Color Schemes for Small Spaces

As you are deciding which colors to use in your small space, you should try to keep your color palette fairly light and monochromatic. If your furnishings, flooring and walls do not have a lot of contrast, this will make your space seem larger. Also try to stay away from patterns and stick to solid colors where possible. If you do want to pull in patterns, keep them muted. If you are afraid that your space may feel too bland, then you can always incorporate one brilliant pop of color in your space.

Light is Larger

Make sure to let a lot of light into your space. Keep your windows open to let in as much light as possible, and if you need privacy add blinds or a shade to your window. That way you can pull your shades for privacy at night and let the sunlight in during the day. By adding sheers to your window along with the shades, you can add a little privacy while still letting light into your space. Mirrors can help to amplify light throughout your space, and if you make sure that you have good lighting throughout your room, it will go a long way towards making the space feel more open.

Furniture Choices

When you are choosing your furniture, make sure that you pay attention to scale. By selecting pieces for your room that are not too small or too large, you can make the room feel roomy and balanced. If the furniture scale is too small the room will feel cluttered, and if it is too large it will diminish the space.
