Importance of sleep is much emphasized. So many health issues are the result of inadequate sleep. Likewise, so much more is spoken about sleep in day to day life. But, before going deep into importance of sleep and how many hours sleep is required by a body, first lets' know what sleep is. Sleep is a state of a body in which it takes rest and makes body prepare for next day's bodily activities and rejuvenates it. Sleep is vital for energy and strength. Also, sleep is termed as unconscious state when it is completely unaware of what is happening in the world.

After all day's long excessive mental and physical stress body requires rest. This rest is done in the form of taking sound sleep. Without sleeping rest is 80% incomplete. During sleep, mind and body are fully rejuvenated, fill with energy and become brisk. Thus, it is very essential to take proper hours of sleep. Your health is directly proportional to adequate sleep. Thus, no carelessness would be accepted. The most common yet serious side effects noted in people do not take proper sleep is irritableness and peevishness. Such people are short tempered also. These symptoms are not a good sign. But over sleeping is not the solution of it. One has to have take required hours of sleep only. A proper balance should be maintained.

Number of hours sleep required by the body differs from age to age. Thus, know how many hours sleep your body requires and stick to the time duration. This variation has biological reasons. Without going deep into those reasons lets know how many hours sleep different age groups require.


Let's start with the infants. Infants are very young babies. They include children within three months to one year age group. Children within three months require largest amount of sleep. They should take a sleep of at least 18 hours per day. After three months slowly their number of hours of sleeping should be reduced to 14 hours. This should be continued till they touch three years age.

Next come children of three to five year age groups. As children keep growing up their sleep duration keep reducing. 3-5 years age group children should take 12 hours of sleep every day. When they crosses the age five, their sleeping hours should be further reduced to 10 hours per day. This 10 hours duration is for 5 to 10 years children. Adolescents or teenagers are required to take 8-10 hours of sleep daily.

Finally come adults. This age group body demand eight hours of sleep on a regular basis. When they turn old, the number of sleeping hours turns six for them. Thus, you can see a vast change in sleeping hours from infants to old age. This is how body should function. Provide your body the number of hours sleep it calls for. Sticking to it will surely provide you healthy body and healthy mind. In case, if suffering from sleeping disorders like insomnia, hypersomnia and parasomnia, etc. do find treatment for them ASAP. Having a proper sleep is must for the body. It maintains health as well as renders trouble free life.
