Adobe Acrobat - The Acrobat Review
Adobe Acrobat is a member of the family of application software developed by Adobe Systems. It's function is to view, create, manipulate, print and manage files in Portable Document Format (PDF), which is one of the most popular forms of creating and reading eBooks. All members of the family, except Adobe Reader (formerly Acrobat Reader), are commercial software; Adobe Reader however, is available as freeware and can be downloaded from Adobe's web site as well as many other websites. Adobe Reader enables users to view and print PDF files but has negligible PDF creation capabilities, or in other words does not allow you to edit or create PDF documents. Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader are widely used as a way to present information with a fixed layout that is similar to a paper publication. Since the early 1990s, the Adobe Acrobat software product has had several competitors, some of which use their own document formats, such as: * AnyView from Binar Graphics
* Common Ground from No Hands Software
* Envoy from WordPerfect Corporation
* Folio from NextPage
* Replica from Farallon Computing
* WorldView from Interleaf
* DjVu from AT&T Laboratories/DjVu Project/LizardTech/Celartem/Caminova By the late 1990s, PDF had become the de facto standard for documents and eBooks, and the others had become largely historical footnotes. This in turn has led to many more competitors for Adobe Acrobat, providing both free and commercial programs that create or manipulate PDF, such as programs like Ghostscript, Foxit, Nitro PDF and Nuance Communications. The Adobe company also allows Acrobat plug-ins to be developed by third parties, which can add extra functions within the Acrobat program. New vendors now offer products that compete with some features offered by Adobe Acrobat, but most Acrobat users all agree that there is no other program that can truly replace Acrobat. New product offers rely on progress made by web browsers, databases, cloud-computing related technologies. * French start-up company netsas.com offers a program called "Shorcut." Shortcut enables web based sharing and marking-up of marketing and design documents within the web browser, without a plug-in. The Shortcut program is currently beta-tested.
