Adult Nocturnal Enuresis Or Bedwetting: What Can Be Done?
Though it is common in childhood, bedwetting or enuresis can also affect adults
, negatively impacting on confidence and self esteem.
According to research, at least 1% of all adults over the age of 18 experience this distressing complaint. Many people may have suffered their entire life with bedwetting, while still others may have little or no history of enuresis and only begin experiencing it later in life.
Most often occurring at night, while sleeping, adult bed wetting can also happen when napping or dozing off during the daytime.
There is the possibility that enuresis has a genetic component, since it can run in families, but we know that it can also be caused by physical issues such as prostate enlargement, diabetes and urinary tract infections etc.
Research has found that the neurological system may be slow in processing the sensation that comes from a full bladder in some people. There is a possibility that an overactive or unstable bladder may also be involved.
For these reasons it is always wisest to consult with your doctor before considering treatment of a psychological nature.
Psychological difficulties are a major cause of wetting the bed as an adult. This is especially so when a person has a history of enuresis as a child and finds themselves wetting again after a period of being dry. The correct name for this is 'secondary nocturnal enuresis'.
Enuresis may be driven by stress, life changes, or by feelings of insecurity and low self esteem. It may also be connected to issues of low self esteem.
Practical measures that can be taken include using absorbent washable under-sheets, disposable adult diapers or underpants, avoiding alcohol for at least a few hours before retiring, and drinking less liquid in the evening.
Bed-wetting alarms may prove helpful for some people. Such devices either sound an alarm or else vibrate when activated by moisture; this is intended, of course, to awaken the person.. Doctors may also prescribe drugs in order to assist. Though medication does not usually cure adult nocturnal enuresis, it can help control it and afford a much-needed break.
Biofeedback strategies have proved useful, and these are intended to help restore the connection between brain and bladder. Such treatment often requires months to complete.
As mentioned, underlying psychological issues can be a factor in the occurrence of enuresis. Because of this is really is well worth investigating hypnotherapy in order to get to the root of the problem. Make sure you work only with a properly qualified and experienced hypnotherapist on a 1-2-1 basis.
Using self hypnosis, or a good self-hypnosis recording designed specifically to help increase self esteem can prove very helpful.
Regardless of your age, bedwetting is really nothing to be ashamed of, so don't be afraid to talk things over with your doctor so that any physical causes can be eliminated before seeking alternative help.
Above all, stay positive -- enuresis can be successfully treated!
