. One of the easiest solutions for safeguarding your costly electrical devices from such irregularities is to install a circuit breaker.

Everybody knows that when current flows through any substance including a wire in our case, it generates heat. The amount of heat produced is directly proportional to the amount of current flowing. Also, flowing current from a wire creates a magnetic field around the conducting medium. Higher the current flow, more is the magnetic field. These are the two basic principles of modern day circuit breakers.

In actual practice, circuit breaker acts as an automated switch. A switch like handle acts as the interface between the breaker device and the homeowner. Although it is automatic but you can use it manually as well. It uses four positions namely 'on', 'off', 'tripped' and 'reset'. On and off positions are pretty much predictable while the 'tripped' position may be specified in different ways. Common one is a red mark located either on the front of the breaker, or in between the on and off switches of the tripped position. The breaker can be reset by shifting the position of the switch in the off direction until a sound of click is heard. Now, you can switch on the breaker.

Before you proceed on to the next step (resetting and turning on the breaker switch), fix the problem that is causing the circuit-breaker to shift towards the off position. The faulty appliance should either be turned off or unplugged in order to maintain the normal operation of the unit.

A switch and a breaker have got many things in common. Both of them have toggle handles, levers, springs and many other circuitries. Also, both use a bimetallic switch to determine the overheating of the device. This is a very important aspect as this switch can warn you before the occurrence of a mishap.

Nowadays, the popularity of circuit breakers is increasing and fuses are losing their grip over the market. A breaker can be reset and used again while a switch can not be. This is the main reason for the decreasing usage of the fuses.

The features like 'reset' and 'multiple usages' allow you to reduce the weight of your electrical toolbox as the need of a number of tools to tackle an emergency situation reduces.
