Adventurous Family Summer Holidays

The end of July to the beginning of September marks the British summer holidays. Schools across the country take an extended break and millions of families flock to the airports to take a well earned break away. Traditionally, families will spend their summer holidays on a fly and flop beach break where days are spent lazing by the pool and on the beach. This is understandable as a summer holiday will be many families only trip abroad each year and is a perfect way to relax and unwind from the stresses and strains of daily life. However, travelling a bit further a field and experiencing something very different or new can breathe more life into you and your family than any beach break ever could.

For something very adventurous, July is the perfect time to head to the hills of Mongolia. The land of Genghis Khan will be something your family will never forget and a very different experience from what you are probably used to. There are pretty basic transport links and a contrast of accommodation from luxurious hotels to nomadic tents in the countryside.

Mongolia has short, warm summers and temperatures are on average around 21 degrees Celsius in July still enough to top up the tan. Flights arrive into Ulan Bator, a city situated at the foot of a range of hills. Ulan Bator is a remote outpost with enough nice hotels and activities to warrant a couple of days stay at least. Visits the remains of dinosaurs found in the Gobi Desert or the country's largest monastery. However, most travellers to this beautiful country want to get out in the countryside and experience what life is really like for the nomadic Mongolian people.

For a holiday experience seeped in rich culture and environmental wonders, head to Peru in August. Fly into Lima and then take a 40 minute plane journey to the pretty city of Cuzco. From here you can trek to the famous Inca site of Machu Picchu, which is northwest of the city, or escape the crowds and stay in the exciting Manu National Park.

Spend a couple of days in Cuzco as it is worth exploring the beautiful colonial streets and then when you have finished your Incan adventure at Machu Picchu take another 40 minute plane ride to the Boca Manu. From here get on a motorised canoe and sail down the Madre de Dios River to the rustic cabins of the Manu Wildlife Center. You'll need at least three days here to get a full jungle experience where you and your family can spend afternoons exploring the jungle in search of monkeys, take a boat trip to visit Amazon parrots and large macaws feasting on the clay. Take night time boat trips and climb to the top of the canopy to observe the activity of the Jungle animals at dusk. From here fly back to Cusco and enjoy the dry air and laid back atmosphere.

Take a break from luxury family holidays on the beach and enjoy an experience that is richer and more memorable than a traditional summer family holiday. An adventure to far off and remote lands can leave you and your family feeling mentally and physically invigorated and ready to tackle daily life again when you get home.
