Here's another example: Let's say Jim runs a web comic. It's funny, it's well drawn, it has a lot of readers, but it's not monetized and doesn't even pay for itself. So one day he mentions on his web comic, that he used Brand X pens to draw with. Jim has just opened an affiliate account with the art material dealer and got his own unique affiliate link which he inserts into his page. Now a few artists click through and buy those pens that he just recommended. It may not make him enough money to live on (how much is a set of pens, anyways?), but it might just be enough to keep the website up and running, and if he gets a few more affiliate accounts with other merchants, he may just make a comfortable income while he enjoys posting his silly drawings on the web.

Affiliate marketing allows you to essentially write about whatever you want, and potentially enables you to make an income with that. Depending on what you're writing about and If you do it right, your affiliate commissions can pay you handsomely. If you treat your affiliate marketing as a serious business it can bring in great profits if you are mediocre about it you may make a little money but noting to write home about!

Bottom line, your income might be next to nothing, it might just pay the bills or it could amount to Millions. Whichever way you look at it, what it comes down to is this: you provide the kind of content that web surfers want to read, put your affiliate link on your page and your affiliate partner gives you a cut if you can get your visitors to buy something. Simple!
