Every affiliate marketing practitioner wants to get to the top of the rankings for their chosen keywords
. However, it's not always as easy as all that. If everybody could do it, then there just wouldn't be enough spots at the top. I've been in the top position many times and for a variety of different niches and keywords. In this article I'm going to share with you what you need to consider when you are aiming for the top spot.
Be picky with your keywords. You cannot just select any words that you feel are relevant to your site. You'll need to do some serious research. The simplest approach to take is to use the Google Adwords tool. Select a word that does not have a high level of competition. Once you find something that is highly relevant (I usually pick about 5 keywords), then head over to a browser window and do a Google search. Check what sites are displaying and whether you are barking up the right tree for what you are selling.
Next you need to take a look at the competition and whether they have left any gaps in the optimisation. I like to use Traffic Travis for this. By using the SEO keyword tool it's possible to see whether the competition have optimised every tag on their site. You can also see whether they have entered their site for DMOZ, the age of their domain and how many links they have built so far. Compare your site and how many links you think you can build and you'll have some idea of how long it might take to be up there with with them. You'll also be given a ranking on the difficulty level of competing too.
Build your links. This is the most essential task - but it has to be implemented in the right way. Just adding links won't cut it. You need to use anchor text that points back to your site. For example if your chosen keyword was 'paper airplanes' then you need to use that as the clickable text that people use to reach your site. This is one of the key ways that Google can understand what your site is about.
Optimise your site. This is another way that Google can understand what your site is about. Once you have done your keyword homework, you'll need to add them to your site in all the right spots. This means adding them to the title tag, meta description, alt text on the image files and also as the name of the image files. Yes, go ahead and save the image file with the keyword as the name. For example paperairplanes.jpg.
Other tags that you need to pay attention to are the H1, H2 and H3 tags. These are the headline tags for your pages. Make the most of meta keywords and also categories on your blog too. Before you know it you'll be on your way to the top and pulling in the clients.
