Most often as an affiliate, one is often faced with the option to use any or all of the marketing tools provided by an affiliate program
. But which of these tools offered perform better in terms of converting clicks to sign ups? Bear in mind that there is a whole cycle to this, which starts from a visitor on your site clicking on a link or banner that leads them to the landing page or the website of the merchant you are promoting.
There are lots of factors one needs to consider before choosing one of the tools offered. But first, lets talk about the tools offered by most affiliate programs.

The most widely used from this pool of marketing resources are ofcourse banners. But do banners really convert? Look at it this way. Just by placing a banner doesnt mean you will start generating links. What forms a high converting banner is the messaging, the look and feel. And most often than not, affiliate programs do not go indepth into designing a banner.
Textlinks are perhaps the best from the lot. Not only can you place them anywhere on your site but they often attract the highest click-through-rate. The reason behind this is the simple fact that they are more relevant. While text links offer you a high click-through rate, the deciding factor lies in where you place this text link that influences a click to a sign up.
Direct Downloads are perhaps used only if you are promoting a webapp or a software. By placing the direct download link from your site, you save the visitor the trouble of going to the merchant site. Merchants promoting software or any tools that require a download, often include a direct download links in their marketing pool. By offering a demo of the product directly from your site, you can look forward to more sucessful conversions.
Rotating banners are just a step ahead of the usual banners you would place on your site. What makes a rotating banner sucessful is if it is able to geo target. A visitor from France would prefer to see prices in Euro than in US dollars, likewise for the language too.
Im not a big fan of rich media unless they provide something unique to keep the site visitor engaged. An interactive tool on your website will help people to stay longer on your site. However, placing too many interactive media/flash banners tend to distract the visitor.
Newsletters are effective only if you have a database of users, which most often than not isnt the case all the time. By using autoresponders, you can set up the process such that on every successful registration to your site the user is sent an email. The content of the newsletter plays a crucial role in converting.
Intext linking sure helps in generating more clicks and is applicable only if you are on a CPC program.
Widgets are an innovative way to provide useful and relevant information to your site visitors. From price comparison tools to currency exchange converters, widgets help in engaging your audience and also give you a chance of a higher conversion rate.
There are many more tools that once can choose from but the bottom line being that you need to keep the context and then place the call to action.
