Affiliate Marketing Using Pay Per Click Advertising - A Primer

Affiliate Marketing is a great way to make money on the Internet

. You can drive 'ready to buy' visitors to your affiliate websites using Pay Per Click adverts in an affordable way. Your affiliate marketing can become the best affiliate program around and is one answer to the big question "How to make money on the Internet?".

So, what does Pay Per Click advertising look like? We will start with Google PPC advertising as it is the best established by examining it from the user experience. PPC Ads show up in two places on Google search results. Look first at the top of the results just under the search box and you will often see a box with a colored background containing up to three sponsored ads. The second is on the right side where up to six or seven adverts can be displayed.

Because of the tight screen space writing these ads is an art. You only have a short headline, a few words of text and the URL of your page. Unlike a press ad the viewer can not refer back to them as Google recycles them through depending upon the advertiser's bid. On the other hand the ads are selected to match the search so the advertiser is getting an interested audience. You won't get ads for winter tires when the user is searching for diapers.

The reader can click on the link to be taken to the advertiser's website or affiliate link. Whenever there is a click then Google makes a note of it and so can calculate the ad's popularity.

Ads also appear on other's websites when the site owner subscribes to Google Adsense. These are marked as 'Ads from Google'.

How does this affect you as a PPC advertiser? First, how can you decide if PPC is for you? It's a matter of doing some easy sums. Do not skip this bit because, if you do then you could end up paying out a lot of money very quickly.

In simple terms let's say you are paying $ 2 per click and getting 100 clicks per day which results in ten sales per day each of which gets you $ 27. So income = $ 270, cost = $ 200 so net profit on the day is $ 70. It may not sound like a lot but, if those are your figures, then if you can keep this up on autopilot and build another ten affiliate marketing websites or campaigns You can generate a decent income. Week after week after week.

How do you work on a new campaign to get it to perform? Here are three key steps for you.

Step 1 - Cap your spend

Always look at your settings and your management so as to minimize potential loss, with current or new campaigns. Set your daily budget as big as you can afford for a few days (Google likes big budgets) but limit the number of clicks with your bid figure. Use the bidding option to set the "bid per click" manually. Then watch it like a hawk over the first few days and change the parameters as you see things develop.

Step 2 - Improve click-through rate by running A/B tests

Check your 'click-through' rate in Google's reports. This tells you how effective your ad is at getting a response. The higher your click through rate then the cheaper your ad will become. Run A/B tests comparing your current ad with a new one and keep the better performing.

Step 3 - Look at your customer's path to the purchase so as to minimize losses on the way

Let's assume that your customer journey runs like this. The Ad is seen and clicked by a prospect. They are transported to your affiliate landing page where pre-sell the prospect on the opportunity. Then they link through to the vendors site and then finally to the payment page. All that's left is the possibility of a guarantee claim back.

It's a fact of life, prospects drop out at every stage. The vendor's site is out of your control (you did pick a good one did didn't you?) but you can make the prospect see how easy and beneficial it is to purchase so they stick on the path to the sale. You may try chopping out your own site totally. No need to be proud, just measure and act according to the results. Then you can successfully build the best affiliate program.

Pay Per Click can easily give you, the affiliate marketer, instant prospect traffic. It can begin to flow within minutes of your ad's approval; but take care with your set up and keep monitoring progress. Having read it you now know more about how to make money on the Internet.
