Yes, of course, you can play Age of Conan and even level up to level 80 without having the extension: Age of Conan Rise of the Godslayer. So what is the point? Why pay more?
First of all, you will have access to the new race in the game: Khitans. Even though I generally give my Khitans japanese name, they would mostly correspond to chinese or Koreans. They do hide behind a great wall.
I find the Khitans fascinating, beautifully made and with exciting tattoos and look. So I do have quite a few myself.
Beside the Khitans, you get access to a new low level place (level 20 - 40) called Gateway to Khitai. This is the Khitan's home, but of course, any of your characters can quest there. The Gateway to Khitai is a very exciting place. The quests are very different from what you know from the game, there are several quests where you have to disguise yourself to spy on others or to kill someone (sneak into a tent with inconspicuous clothes, switch to your battle gear and kill the boss) and I just love this kind of quests.
Lots of laughs, different quests and very nice rewards and Experience Points. You level very quick in Gateway to Khitai and you get out of there at around level 38 - 40 fully geared, and nicely geared. Many "blue drops" in Gateway.
Then you have the Alternate Advancement (also called AA). You begin to gather points for that from level 20. It is the so called: AA XPs. You have to have one million points before you get your first AA. A AA point is a bit like a feat but they are divided in three parts: Mastery, Prowess and Expertise.
Mastery are PvE related features, Prowess are PvP related features. Both are the identical for all players. And then you have Expertise which is depending on your class.
These AA will give you extra features: better resistance to magic attack, more stamina, more constitution, better resistance to fear, to knock back, etc. And you will have extra abilities and combos.
You can't begin to gather AA points before you are level 20 and before you have the extension Rise of the Godslayer.
A big advantage by questing in Gateway to Khitai from level 20 is that there are two quest chains that will end up by you getting a phial (epic reward). By right-clicking this phial you will get one AA point. So you will end up getting out of Khitai at level 40'ish fully geared and with two AA-points. Not bad, eh?
Now, you can get to level 80 without all that, of course.
But Funcom has been really smart on this one: Instead of making extra levels, which would make your hard earned gear obsolete, they just made a whole world for level 80 quests.
You can begin to get quests from level 76, to be honest, but you won't live long enough for most of them. You have a whole world with different countries, twelve different factions to be friend or foe with, funny quests, repeatable quests (most of the faction's related quests are repeatable), the possibility to get new, exciting mounts, instances, raids, and many more things.
With Rise of the Godslayer, you really have a good reason to hurry up to 80.
Besides, if you buy the extension, you get, beside Khitai, 30 days of game time, an ingame pet puma, an ingame starter package (bag and other gear all your characters can use), so it is definitely worth it.
