Aiming To Go Far With Those Skeet Shooting Basics

Skeet shooting, also known simply as skeet is a well known gun sport where competitors

take it in turns to break (shoot) target disks (also known as skeet or clays) with ammunition fired from a conventional shotgun. The targets are fired at different angles and the competitor has to stand at different points known as stations around the skeet shooting field thereby creating a variation in the trajectory of each target as seen from the competitor's location.

A skeet field consists of two house which hold the skeet traps that launch the clay pigeons, and eight stations where the shooting takes place from. Stations one through seven are located equidistant on a semi-circle with 19m radius and station eight lies halfway between stations one and seven. There are specific rules and guidelines to maintain consitency between the height and angle of the targets launched from each of the houses and equally many of the rules of the sport revolve around safety of the competitors and other personnel on the skeet range.

The sport is a very competitive one and is included in the Olympic games. Some participants have never fired a gun outside the skeet field but for many, skeet shooting is an important method for improving their skills in hunting. It is common for a cross-over of participants in skeet shooting to take part in gun sports with live game in the hunting field.

The different patterns and angles of the skeet flying through the air is a good way of simulating many of the possible flights of birds when a hunter is out hunting in the wild. It is not difficult to understand therefore that the sport was invented by a grouse shooter, Charles Davies, back in the 1920s so that he could perfect his shooting technique. Davies set up a round-the-clock layout but the game later evolved to its current setup when a chicken farm next door stopped shooting in that direction thereby closing off half of the field. In 1923, one of the shooters, William Harnden Foster, solved the problem by placing a second trap at the 6 o'clock position successfully cutting the course in half - that layout has been adopted in the sport ever since.

Although mainly dominated by male participants, skeet shooting is played by both male and female competitors and continues to attract participants of all ages. Understanding the rules of skeet shooting are important for competitors but these are usually taught with any club participation or coaching. The rules can also be found online at the National Skeet Shooting Association website or by simply browsing the web. It is important to note that the rules of international skeet, olympic skeet and American skeet all have some variations so depending on where you are competing and at what level there may be some differences to be aware of.

Skeet shooting is a humane alternative for those not wishing to hunt live game and it is a skillful, fun and competitive sport that deserves its well known position amongst the variety of shooting disciplines available.
