Air cooled chillers employ a cycle of evaporation and condensation processes inside a closed

system to reduce the temperature of the air around. These are more efficient than Freon-based chillers used in refrigerators. The evaporator consists of a frame of tubes around a chamber which is connected to a compressor. The compressor joins a condenser which in-turn is connected to the evaporator. Air cooled chiller does not mean water is not used at all. Actually water is not employed to absorb waste heat but used otherwise. The liquid refrigerant in evaporator chamber makes water in surrounding tubes cold by radiation. This chilled water passes via circuit to be cooled and absorbs heat making the region around it cold. When the water becomes hot it radiates heat to the refrigerant in evaporator and vaporizes it. This vapour on passing through compressor is subjected to high pressure and heat which is then sent to condenser. This has a series of air-cooled vanes where heat is given off to surrounding air. The vapour liquefies here and goes back to evaporator to continue the chilling process.

Many air cooled chiller manufacturers specialize in making chillers for specific industries like plastics and pharmaceuticals and so on. Robust chillers are imperative in deep freeze store houses which refrigerate meat, fruits and vegetables besides in central cooling of huge malls and office buildings. Residential buildings, high rises and huge villas with central air-conditioning facilities require air cooled chillers specially designed for the purpose.
