Aishwarya was born as Aishwarya Krishnaraj Rai to Krashnaraj Rai and Vrinda Rai
, on 1st November 1973, at Mangalore, Karnataka. Rai family moved to Mumbai when Aishwarya was very young. She did her schooling at Arya Vidya Mandir High School in Santacruz.
She attended Jai Hind College and later shifted to D. G. Ruparel College to complete her HSC in science stream. She was planning to study architecture, but changed her mind and went into modeling. Before trying her luck in films, Aishwarya was a successful model.
She started modeling in her college days. Aishwarya participated in Miss India contest in 1994. While Sushmita Sen claimed the crown, Aishwarya secured a second place. Later, she won the Miss India World and went on to be crowned as Miss World in 1994.
She was also honored with Miss Photogenic Award. It was then, that Aishwarya first thought of joining Bollywood. Aishwarya debuted in Mani Ratnam Iruvar (1997), a Tamil movie which was a fictionalized account of lives of Tamil Nadu political figures M. G. Ramchandran and M. Karunanidhi.
The film was critically acclaimed and won two National Film Awards. Aur Pyar Ho Gaya (1998) was Aishwarya Bollywood debut. The film was lashed by critics and went bust at Box Office. However, her next film Jeans (1998), which was made in Tamil and later dubbed in Hindi.
The film was applauded by critics and audience alike, and was India entry for the Academy Awards. 1999 was a good year for Aishwarya as she delivered three hit films back to back. Her first movie in 1999 was Aa Ab Laut Chalein (1999) opposite Akshaye Khanna.
The movie was directed by Rishi Kapoor. Sanjay Leela Bhansali Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (HDDCS) (1999) was released the same year, which turned out Aishwarya first super hit film. She was paired opposite Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn for HDDCS.
She also received her first Filmfare Best Actress Award for this movie. Subhash Ghai musical Taal (1999) portrayed Aishwarya as a village girl, Mansi, who turns into a pop star after being turned down by her love. Taal (1999) became first Bollywood film to make it to top 20 on Variety Box Office list.
The film also earned Aishwarya a Filmfare nomination for Best Actress. Aishwarya next appeared in Mansoor Khan Josh (2000) which was a love story caught up in gang rivalry based in Goa. She also appeared in Satish Kaushik Hamara Dil Apke Paas Hai (2000), opposite Anil Kapoor.
The film was a moderate success, but Aishwarya gained a lot of critical acclaim for her role in this movie. Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke (2000) was Aishwarya first film opposite Abhishek Bachchan, which went bust at Box Office. Raincoat (2004), which was directed by Rituparno Ghosh, earned Aishwarya a Filmfare nomination and much critical appreciation.
The year 2005 did not seem that well for Aishwarya, as none of her movies fared well. Shabd (2005) went for a toss at Box Office. Even her Hollywood release, Mistress Of Spices (2005), could not catch much attention. Aishwarya also featured in three English films which include Journey Across India (2007), Provoked (2007) and The Last Legion (2007).
Jodhaa Akbar (2008) was Ashutosh Gowariker magnum opus based on the account of Moghul emperor Akbar and his Rajput wife, Jodhaa Bai. Aishwarya essayed the character of Jodhaa Bai with finesse and was nominated for Filmfare Best Actress Award.
Sarkar Raj (2008), a sequel to Sarkar (2005), in which Aishwarya played the role of a young industrialist, was also another hit that year. In 2009, Aishwarya played the character of Sonia Slanders in Hollywood movie The Pink Panther 2 (2009).
Sonia is assistance to inspector Closeau played by Steve Martin. The movie did moderate business all over the world. Aishwarya was last seen in Mani Ratnam Raavan (2010) (Raavanan in Tamil), opposite Abhishek Bachchan and Tamil actor Vikram.
Tough the Hindi version suffered, the Tamil version of the film did good business. Aishwarya films include S. Shankar Endhiran (2010), opposite South superstar Rajnikant. She would also star in Action Replay, directed by Vipul Amrutlal Shah and Guzaarish, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
Aishwarya was part of a world tour called The Magnificent Five along with Aamir Khan, Rani Mukherjee, Akshaye Khanna and Twinkle Khanna. She was also the first Indian actress to be the part of jury at Cannes Film Festival in 2003.
In summer of 2008, Aishwarya joined husband Abhishek Bachchan, father in law Amitabh Bachchan along with Preity Zinta and Ritiesh Deshmukh on The Unforgettable World Tour, a series of concerts. Aishwarya won 2 Filmfare Awards out of 8 nominations.
She also holds Rajiv Gandhi Award for excellence in the field of entertainment (2002) and Padma Shri Award (2009). Aishwarya received Most Beautiful Miss World of All Times pageant in the year 2000. she is also the first Indian actress to be replicated in wax at Madame Tussuad wax museum in 2004.
She was also accorded by Ordre des Arts et des Letters, which is France second highest civilian honor in 2009. ishwarya also raked 63rd on Most Desired Woman list in 2010. Aishwarya father, Krishnaraj Rai was a marine engineer and mother Vrinda Rai is a writer.
She has an elder brother, Aditya Rai, who is in merchant navy. Aishwarya started dating Salman Khan in 1999. Their affair lasted 2 years and in 2001 she called it quit. She blamed Salman for break up. She also stated that she was being physically harassed by Salman Khan.
Aishwarya was later reported dating Vivek Oberoi. However, ending all speculations, she married Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan on 20th April 2007 at Bachchan Juhu residence Pratiksha. The marriage was a private ceremony and only family friends were present during the ceremony.
