In the past twenty years or so, "baby-sitting" has become one of the best ways for

teen-age boys and girls to make extra money and also help their neighbors. A baby-sitter is a part-time nurse who stays with a younger child when its parents want to go out for the evening. It is important for a baby-sitter to remember that any nurse, even a part-time nurse, has one of the most important and most responsible of all jobs. It is not work to be treated lightly. During the school year, homework may be done while baby-sitting, but it should never be treated as an opportunity to invite friends in for a party. If you know the answers to the following questions (proposed by the National Safety Council) you will help yourself to be a good baby-sitter.

Before the child's mother leaves- Know what can be done to make her child feel certain that he is being protected. Be sure you know the answers to these questions. 1. Have the parents told the child they are leaving? 2. Does the child know your name? 3. Do you know the child's name and his nickname? 4. Have you the written time schedule for the child's play, meals, bath and sleep? 5. Where are the child's clothing, play equipment, bath articles and sleeping garments? 6. What undressing procedures are customarily followed? 7. Is the child to be bathed in the tub at bedtime? 8. How are sleeping garments and covers prepared for restful and safe sleep, and where is he to sleep? Know how to control danger spots in and around the house. Ascertain the following: 1. Are the fires or the heating system under control? 2. How is the kitchen stove lighted? Turned off? 3. Where are the safe areas in which the child has been taught to play? 4. What safety reminders does the child most frequently need?

For example: (a) Does he stay away from the stove? The hot water tank? (b) Does he stay away from electric cords? (c) Does he stay away from the sewing machine? (d) Does he stay away from the windows? (e) Does he stay away from the stairs? 5. Are medicines, cleaning agents, lye, etc., out of the child's reach? Know what to do in case of an emergency. 1. At what telephone number can you reach the parents? 2. If they cannot be reached by telephone, whom should you call? 3. Where are the first-aid supplies? (a) How should you treat a slight burn? (b) How should you treat a slight cut? (c) How should you treat a slight scratch? 4. In case of fire, do you know the fire department telephone number?
