All About Cleaning Religious Artifacts

, it is critical that they be handled with extreme care. Although all relics and artifacts need to be handled carefully, it seems that most people believe that those that depict a religion any religion should be handled even more carefully. But what should be done when they need to be cleaned? Part of the answer is going to depend on their condition, the material they are made of, what substances need to be cleaned off of them, and also how dirty they really are.

First of all, it should be noted that some people consider various coins as pertaining to religion. If you have some coins that you need to be cleaned, you need to double and triple check about it, because cleaning coins generally makes them less desirable to collectors. If you have some sort of ceramic statue that you need cleaned, you are going to be able to just take plain water and a mild soap and wipe very gently with a damp cloth. You must be twice as careful if they have been repaired, if they are damaged in some way or if they have cold painted decorations on them.

If you have religious artifacts that are brass, mix equal parts of vinegar, flour and salt. Using a soft cloth, you can rub the mixture on the brass and rinse very well with that plain water. All you need to shine it is a clean, dry soft cloth. Even though porous pottery and ironstone are not as prevalent for this type of relics as other materials, if you need to clean something made of these materials, all you need is something known as wig bleach, which can be obtained from a beauty salon. Again, you can use a soft cloth for the application, and of course be sure to rinse thoroughly and dry to avoid any unforeseen damage.

What is much more common for religious artifacts than pottery, ironstone and brass is wood. If you have some relics that are made of wood that can use a really good cleaning, you need to be careful. If you have mildew on them, you can use a cloth that is moistened with a mixture of one cup of water combined with tablespoon of bleach and also a tablespoon of liquid dish soap. You can rinse afterwards if you want to, and all you need to dry them is a dry cloth.

If you have marble sculptures, make sure you do not leave it near a window or an active fireplace; they can discolor from pollutants and scorch or crack near heat. To clean very old ivory, dust with a soft cloth or brush, and use a wool cloth for buffing. Make sure you do not polish dark antique bronze ever because you are going to destroy the old patina that protects the piece, which also makes it more valuable. Do not use chlorine for bronze items; in fact, if you have bronze religious artifacts displayed in a room, just using cleaning products that have chlorine in them is going to harm your bronze pieces.
