All About Databases
Databases are organized systems used for the storing, managing, and reporting of data. Business heavily rely on databases to perform any number of functions, including maintaining customer information, sales and purchasing data, employee records, payroll transactions, and inventory. The value of the database is not only in the organization of the raw data, but in the reporting that can be generated with the click of a mouse.
Design and Development
So often I have seen businesses using a system of word documents, excel spreadsheets, and external address books to manage their business data. They are unable to see a global snapshot of the company's history, current status, or projected statistics. The data may seem organized in the sense that it is all logged into some form of tracking tool on their computer, but to analyze the sales history to determine the expected revenue that will be generated from one particular client involves the use of two or three separate computer files, a calculator, a pencil, and a piece of paper. This method is time consuming and costly to the company and is easily remedied with the design and implementation of a simple database. The data that you currently store in other locations can be easily imported into the new system for a seamless transition.
The term database tends to have a connotation of being an expensive business tool, and many business owners assume that they just do not have the budget for something like that. This is simply not true. A good database developer can construct a powerful tool for very little cost using software that you probably already have. It is a cost effective solution to your organizational situation that will pay for itself in the decrease of expenses related to time and office supplies. In other words, it is an investment that will pay for itself.
Training and Support
Once your database is designed, populated with any existing data housed in other locations, and loaded onto your computer, the training program should begin. A good developer should package the training costs in your quote. A great developer will offer the training at no charge. Why? Simply because a great developer knows that a properly designed system with true customization will be user friendly and will require very little training.
The designs should start with a fully integrated, user friendly dashboard from which the actions of your database can be controlled. Outstanding support and service should also be an option with the product, including the installation of upgrades and improvements as they become available.
If your developer is not offering these simple services and guarantees, keep looking. These developers are out there.
