All About Ip Telephony Systems

The development and advancement of IP telephony systems have whipped consumers and industry professionals into a frenzy over the past few years

. The prospect of using "converged" data networks to make phone calls at a fraction of today's costs, proving irresistible individuals and businesses all over the world.

What are IP Telephony Systems?

For those people who are not technologically minded, the whole principle of IP telephony can often seem very confusing indeed. Put simply, IP telephony systems allow users to carry out phone calls and communicate over the space of the Internet i.e. using Internet Protocol. Instead of the calls being made via the circuit-based century-old telephone network (the Public Switched Telephone network, or PSTN), it relies on packet switching, which sends and receives data across the connection when it is needed, rather than keeping it open all of the time.

This fact allows calls to be made much more cheaply and most IP telephony providers charge users a flat monthly rate, regardless of local or International calls. Obviously then, this is the clearest benefit of IP telephony systems - the ability to vastly reduce the cost of calls. Of course, there are some initial costs of installing an IP telephony system but it is almost certain to pay for itself within a short space of time. IP telephones are certainly are not cheap but prices are constantly falling and becoming much more affordable to the masses.

The Growth of IP Telephony Systems

Despite the obvious euphoria surrounding IP telephony systems, mainly due to its ability to cut call costs, there were early doubts as to whether the technology would ever actually successfully take off. The potential benefits of IP telephony systems were clear but with a smattering of immature and unreliable products on the market, cost concerns, a lack of standards and a general confusion about how to go about installing such systems all played a part in alienating potential users. However, the last few years have seen these problems pushed to the sidelines and the technical glitches patched up. Additionally, organisations gained a much clearer grasp of the costs and benefits of IP telephony systems.

Although IP telephony is yet to take the place of the old, more traditional phone systems, it certainly appears that this will one day soon be the case. All evidence indicates the rise of the IP telephony both in the corporate, business market but also the domestic market. Deciding invest in an IP telephony is simple, but choosing a suitable provider is a little more difficult. In the first instance in searching for a IP telephony provider you need to decide what it is that you want from your new phone system and what features you need and which you can do without. For example, is it crucial that you have caller ID or voicemail? And do you want to retain your old phone number? Different systems provide different features and you need to be sure you are choosing the IP telephony system that is most suited to your needs.
