All About Labiaplasty

Whilst it may not be the most well-known of procedures

, labiaplasty is fast becoming a popular treatment for women who are unhappy with the overall shape of their vagina. This type of surgery will normally not be quite expensive, but it is also different to most other cosmetic procedures in that is more to do with circumstances which are beyond a patient's control.

This treatment should be viewed as a 'medical procedure' rather than a 'cosmetic choice'... Its purpose is to offer a practical solution to women with an oversized or asymmetrical labia minora. This in itself can cause a great deal of physical discomfort for a woman when she is wearing certain items of clothing or taking part in particular activities. Women can be born with this problem, but many will develop it later on in life, often after giving birth.

Pelvic floor muscle exercises can sometimes help with this condition, but they are often insufficient when it comes to regaining the natural shape. An elongation of the labia skin is normally caused by a weakening or stretching of the muscles and one of the biggest causes of this will be multiple childbirths. If this condition is so bad that it is causing continual problems, then labiaplasty will normally be the only realistic way of reshaping the area and providing relief for the patient.

The vast majority of surgeons will refuse to carry out this procedure for purely cosmetic reasons, reserving it for women who are suffering from pain and discomfort.

Anyone who is considering this treatment will need to have a lengthy consultation with the surgeon, followed by a thorough medical assessment. This is all perfectly normal and it gives women the chance to ask as many questions as they want. After all, they will want to be totally sure about going through with this type of surgery. By the time that this assessment is complete, women will have a detailed understanding of exactly what they can expect before, during and after the operation.

On average, the procedure will take between one or two hours to complete and it will normally be carried out under a general anaesthetic. Once that the surgery is complete, the patient will be required to rest in hospital; this period of time can vary considerably depending on the complexity of the operation. It may be only two hours or it could involve an overnight stay. Patients will also need to take some time off work. Again, this will vary from one patient to another, but it will usually be somewhere between one and four weeks.

For the first two weeks after surgery, women are urged to take complete bed rest. They are also advised to abstain from any sexual activity for a minimum of four weeks as the area will still be very tender. It will be completely normal to experience a little discomfort when walking or going to the toilet for a few days, but this can be treated with pain killers and bed rest.
