All About The Bread Slicer
You have probably heard the phrase "this is the best thing since sliced bread"
. Well this has never been truer than a bread slicer for home. You have probably taken a loaf of freshly baked bread (even if it was made at the bakery) and searched for a serrated knife to cut the bread with and haven't been able to find one, on these occasions you often make a mess of the bread with a heavy chef's knife or try to use a butter knife or a steak knife. With a bread slicer there is no more need to struggle when cutting loaves.
Nothing provides the finishing touch to a meal better than some freshly baked bread. No matter what the meal might be, regardless of whether it is Italian or steak and potatoes, bread just makes it better. Freshly baked bread is really pretty easy and there is nothing better than the smell of baking bread billowing from the oven. That smell fills the house with an aroma that beckons everyone to the kitchen.
Bread machines have made making bread even easier. These machines do the baking for you in a small oven like device that comes complete with bread pans and easy to follow directions. Most machines will have the bread cooked in a very short period of time. The only problem is once you come to eat it won't last nearly as long as it took to make it!
Bread slicers provide the perfect sized piece of bread, no matter how you adjust them. If you think that a loaf slicer is just another piece of kitchen equipment that won't get used, like the ice cream machine you used once last summer, then you will be pleasantly surprised.
This device has come far from when they were first invented. The first loaf slicer was invented in 1928 by Otto Frederick Rohwedder. This device was the result of years of trying to figure out how to slice bread equally without crushing the loaf. Otto first came up with the idea in 1912 but did not progress much with the idea until several years later.
Otto faced a setback when his first factory burned down, destroying the prototype and the blue prints for his machine. The rumour was that he was baking bread to slice, when he got called away and forgot it was in the oven. While this is probably just an old wives tale, if it was true Otto certainly would not have been the first or the last person to leave a loaf of bread cooking and to forget about it!
In 1926 pop-up toasters became available to large numbers of people. Inconveniently, many users would have to cut bread with a knife and hope they cut it the right size to fit the toaster consistently. Otto finally saved enough money in 1927 to follow his dream of creating the first bread slicer. In 1928 he finally got it patented and that same year he sold the first single step bread slicing machine.
Eighty years have passed since Otto invented the original machine and now similar devices are available in home sized units. This machine is a good bit different than Otto's machine. While you may not be concerned much with what Otto went through to make this machine available, you will certainly appreciate what he went did the next time you slice bread with your bread slicer, besides this story will give you a topic of conversation the next time you serve sliced fresh baked bread to your dinner guests.
