All About Wicking Sheets
Wicking sheets are one of the greatest inventions of the last few decades
. They help millions of people get a great night's sleep, which is one of the most important things to improve both health and quality of life. Keep reading to discover all the ways these amazing sheets work to give tired sleepers a tranquil night of slumber.
Synthetic Material Equals Splendid Slumber
Many people praise silk and Egyptian cotton as the highest quality materials from which to construct bedding. This may have been the case in the past, but this new wicking technology has turned the tables. These wicking sheets are made from polyester, which often throws people for a loop. Most people associate polyester with clothing that tends to trap in the heat on a hot summer's day.
That may be the case with the older kinds of polyester, but new methods of constructing polyester have led to breakthroughs in its ability to keep people cool. The clothing and sheets made from this new kind of polyester are known for its ability to wick moisture away from a sweating body. This is due to the microfiber construction of this new polyester. The microfiber pockets very rapidly move sweat, or any other kind of moisture, away from the body to the outer layer of the cloth.
Once the moisture reaches the outer layer of the clothing, it is rapidly evaporated into the air. This evaporation leads to a cooling effect that keeps a person wrapped in these sheets feeling comfortable on the hottest summer nights. In fact, the reason people sweat in the first place is to achieve this cooling effect from evaporation.
When the sweat gets trapped in sheets made from traditional materials like cotton, it does not evaporate like it should. This means that the sleeper will often wake up feeling both hot and wet, which is not a great way to get a good night's sleep.
Length of Life
Another positive about the sheets made from this new moisture-wicking polyester is that they are much more durable than sheets made from traditional, natural fibers. They will not only let people sleep in more comfort than traditional sheets, but they will save them money. Instead of having to buy new bedding every year or two, a nice pair of sheets made from polyester wicking fibers will last around five years if they are cared for properly.
Caring for Wicking Fibers
There are two key points to making these sheets last as long as possible. The first is to never use fabric softener when washing these sheets. Fabric softener basically gives fabric a waxy coating, which helps to make the clothing feel soft. Unfortunately, fabric softeners will also gunk up the wicking pathways that moisture flows through in the sheets. Never use fabric softener with any kind of wicking material. If someone accidentally washes them with fabric softener, then wash them again without fabric softener a few times to remove the waxy coating.
The other key point to maximizing wicking fabric lifespan is to let these sheets air dry on a clothesline. They will dry very rapidly due to the wicking ability of the fabric. Putting them through the dryer will wear down the ability of the sheets to wick away moisture, which will shorten the lifespan.
