Shirts can be traced back many hundreds of years and the varieties of shirt serve many different purposes. From elegant dress shirts to more casual options, you are sure to be able to find a shirt to suit the occasion.

The term "shirt" generally refers to an item of clothing worn on the upper body. Men's shirts come in many shapes and sizes with the button down the front' variety being one of the most popular. T-shirts, polo shirts and dress shirts are just a few of the many varieties on the market today.

The classic, long sleeved dress shirt is perfect for any occasion where you need to look smart and chic. Dress shirts do not tend to have pockets and although they are available in a variety of colours, white is the traditional choice. You can team a dress shirt with jeans for a smart/casual look or pair with a suit for a more formal style.

White is a popular colour with all kinds of shirt wearers and a white shirt is considered a wardrobe staple for both men and women. A white shirt can lend itself to a variety of uses, from formal white shirts perfect for a day in the office to simple cotton or linen numbers, perfect for a day at the beach or about town.

T-shirts are another essential in the wardrobe of men today. Originally worn by military soldiers as an undergarment, the t-shirt gained popularity with wider audiences over time. Today, there are a variety of t-shirts available to men, from the classic plain white option to t-shits with slogans, images and text.

V-neck t-shirts have gained popularity in recent years or you can stick to the traditional, crew neck variety. Cotton is the best material to opt for; it is a natural fibre that allows the skin to breathe, leaving the wearer feeling cool and comfortable. T-shirts are typically not worn tucked into trousers or jeans but you can always experiment with different looks to suit your preferences.

Polo shirts are variations on the traditional shirt that make an appearance in most men's wardrobes. A long sleeved polo shirt is classic and masculine and can be worn with jeans or khakis but is not suitable for wearing with smart trousers.

The general rule of thumb is to tuck in when wearing with khakis and leave untucked when wearing with jeans. Polo shirts also come in a short sleeve variety, ideal for warmer weather or wearing beneath jumpers.

Whatever type of shirts grace your wardrobe, take care whilst washing to prolong their lifespan and quality. For white shirts, look out for detergents specially formulated for white clothing and remember to always wash white garments together. 40c is usually the ideal temperature at which to wash cotton but always check the manufacturers label for washing instructions.
