All The Single (lonely) Ladies
Although there have been notable strides in gender equality in recent years
, much remains to be done in changing popular perceptions with regard to gender-defined roles. As difficult as it may be to admit, women still generally get the short end of the stick when it comes to many matters. For example, men are given a lot of leeway when it comes to being single, and most people see nothing wrong with men that remain single well into their 40s. On the other hand, women that choose to remain single are often regarded with a degree of pity and even suspicion, and the less charitable may even place the blame entirely on the woman.
For many people, being single is regarded as a bit of a curse, and women are particularly prone to pity and condescension from seemingly well-intentioned family members and peers. It seems that many people think that when a woman stays single, loneliness is a constant part of her life. However, not all women who are single are powerless with regard to making relationship decisions, and many actually choose to stay single. Loneliness is always a concern of course, but for a growing number of women, it is much less of an issue than independence and personal achievement.
One of the reasons why people are lonely is because they have very little to live for in the way of goals and personal ambition. When you couple that with being single, loneliness is a likely result. In people that suffer from chronic loneliness, there is a high likelihood of incurring any one of a wide variety of health conditions. Illnesses resulting from impaired immune system functioning are actually surprisingly common in people who are lonely, and studies have shown a direct link between being lonely and early mortality. Although there still remains a lot of research to be done on the subject, there are enough indicators to support the theory that loneliness is detrimental to health.
What does all this have to do with the single lady? Simply this: while it is important to make sure that loneliness does not hold sway over your life, there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to live a happy and satisfying life even if you are single. Society often places rigid demands on people to do this, that, or the other thing, and single women are so often on the receiving end of the pressure. If you are single yet don't feel as if you are particularly lonely, you don't have to be concerned that there may be something wrong with you.
Even if you are single, loneliness never has to enter into the picture. Keep in mind that some people would actually do anything to have the chance at being single, and loneliness should hardly ever be an issue if you know how to deal with it. When you live according to your own terms, life really isn't all that bad being single, and loneliness doesn't have to be a constant source of worry.
