All You Need To Know About Aricept

Aricept is a wonder drug that is aimed at improving nerve cell functioning in the brain. Very effective for treating moderate to mild dementia caused by the Alzheimer's disease, the drug is also used to treat various other disorders. It is made up of acetylcholinesterase, a reversible inhibitor with a crystalline powdery white appearance. Mainly intended for oral intake, this drug is available in doses of 5 mg, 10 mg and 23 mg. Donepezil hydrochloride is the main constituent of Aricept. The other active ingredients include lactose monohydrate and methacrylic acid, among others. The yellow color comes from ferric oxide. What You Should Know Before Using Aricept It is important that you inform your physician of your detailed medical history prior to starting on Aricept. If you have been diagnosed with any disorder, such as Heart Rhythm Disorder, obstructive pulmonary disease, enlarged prostate or asthma, you need to let your doctor know about this. You should avoid Aricept if you have been diagnosed with Sick Sinus Syndrome, stomach ulcers, seizure and epilepsy, or COPD. Aricpet: Dosing Information Generally a maintenance dose of 23 mg is advised to most patients. However, the level of tolerance is checked and a lower dose of 5 mg per day is generally recommended to start with. The 5 mg dose is increased after 4 to 6 weeks to 10 mg, after monitoring the response to the drug. The 10 mg dose is increased to 23 mg per day only after 3 months, if everything is positive. It is believed that Aricept helps in retaining much of the acetylcholine in the brain. It must be remembered here that the drug will not be able to cure Alzheimer's and the disease will worsen with time. What the treatment does is delay the degeneration in the brain. Doses must not be missed. However, if you have missed a dose and it is already time for the next dose, do not take two doses together to make up for the missed one. Seek immediate medical help if you are accidentally overdosed. Possible Side Effects of Aricept It is extremely important to know whether you are allergic to any of the ingredients of Aricept, like piperidines. Your doctor must know all the details of your medical history and whether you are taking any prescription medicines. Cases of fainting and slow heart rates have been reported by some people on Aricept. Other common difficulties that have been reported after taking the medicine are difficulty in passing urine, asthma, lung problem and even convulsions and seizures, accompanied by nausea and vomiting. People suffering from stomach ulcers must speak to their physician before taking the medicine.
