All You Need To Know About Fseog Grants
Plenty of fresh high school graduates take long breaks after graduation
, usually because they cannot afford to pay for college education yet. While some of these individuals go back to school in a couple of years, quite a number never really return to school because they still do not have the means to pay for higher education.
A college degree is always a sure fire way to widen one's chances of professional and high paying jobs in the future since many employers take a look at a person's educational background as reference when hiring a person for a job. Anyone with a degree is certainly at an edge above those who do not, that is why most people without college degrees are usually stuck with mediocre and low paying jobs.
However, not having enough money does not have to deter an individual from going to college and getting his or her degree of choice. Today, the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant or FSEOG makes obtaining college degrees possible, especially for those who do not have money to pay for college fees. This grant program was implemented back in 1966, and has been awarding millions of dollars to deserving students over the years. The FSEOG program, like the Pell Grant program, is also run by the federal government. Over four thousand schools all over the country receive FSEOG funds, and these schools then award the money to tens of thousands of students every year.
The FSEOG gives out money based on a person's need, and because of that, one has to fill up a Free Application for Federal Student Aid form. All nine student grant programs of the federal government, as well as a number of state and institutional aid programs require applicants to complete a FAFSA. This form is applied annually by current as well as prospective college students in order to determine if they are eligible for student grants. After submission, the form is then received and evaluated along with any other required documentation. After that, the application can then either be denied or granted.
In order to qualify as a recipient of the FSEOG grant, the applicant must first be enrolled in one of the 4,000 universities that are part of the program. The applicant must also be a US citizen, and must be in 'significant financial need.'
FSEOG grants can be anywhere from $100 to $4000 per year, depending on the applicant's need. This means that students who are in the most need of money can get up to $4000 to pay for all their academic fees. Students whose families can afford to pay, but may need some help on the side, can be awarded with half the money, or can get smaller increments like $500. Once awarded to an individual, the money will then be made available for use once the student gets accepted or is enrolled in the participating university. Usually, Federal Pell Grant awardees are the first people in line to get funds from the FSEOG.
Like the Pell grant, FSEOG money does not have to be repaid in the future. However, FSEOG funds are usually given out on a first come, first served basis, so it is very essential to apply for them as early as possible.
