Alternative Therapies That Combine Well With Traditional Addiction Treatment
When addiction takes hold of you, it has a hold over your body
, mind and spirit. Because of this, treatment and healing have to take place on many levels. Your body may recover from the physical ravages of addiction, but if your mind and spirit do not follow, deep down inside - you are still an addict. If that is the case, you will always be a second away from "relapsing". Alternative therapies can be combined with standard addiction treatment (detoxification, cognitive behavioral therapy and group counseling) to ensure a more holistic (therefore, complete) recovery.
EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) - Known as "acupuncture without needles", the EFT technique boasts a set of self-help tools and brief interventions that provoke changes in addictive thought patterns. This technique involves the stimulation of a series of acupressure points, combined with carefully worded affirmations, to create a shift in consciousness and offer relief from excessive negativity and physical stress.
Therapeutic Drumming - Drumming is an ancient practice founded on the rhythmic heartbeats of our mothers while we were in her womb (the safest place in our existence). This comforting rhythm is the underlying foundation of every "drumming therapy" session. Each session uses the healing power of rhythm and music in addiction treatment. Not only that, "drumming" also enables us to break down social barriers, exposes dormant emotions, decreases feelings of anxiety, depression and stress, as well as, boosts our immune system.
Yoga - Yoga stresses slow, controlled movements to promote mastery over self and help patients recognize self-defeating thoughts in addiction treatment, that trigger addictive behavior. Increased self-awareness through yoga, strengthens inner resources to resist temptation and enables addicts to overcome the pain and discomfort of addiction treatment. Yoga also trains the brains of addicts to recognize that drug cravings are actually emotional needs that can be satisfied in healthy ways.
Expressive Therapy (or Art Therapy) - In addiction treatment, Expressive Therapy is effective because it does not actually feel like therapy. Instead of a counselor starting a session with something as daunting as, "Let us talk.", an addict can communicate using artistic expression. Art has the ability to get addicts in touch with difficult memories and emotions, encouraging addicts to actively participate in the therapeutic process.
When combined with standard addiction treatment, these alternative therapies can help addicts face drug cravings, the triggers to use drugs and, in the end, enhance the recovery process.
