These days with so many dog foods available in the market we maybe just satisfied with buying dog food and feeding our dog to his fill. We have to remember that dogs will not automatically stop eating because they know they are going to be overweight. Just like their masters they can eat more food than they actually need and grow to be very fat. So they should be fed just the right amount of food and the proper kind of food. Just imagine feeding yourself with the wrong kind of food daily over a number of years; this will eventually have a bad effect on your body. The same thing is true with dogs.

It's hard to imagine that long ago this was not the case, the dog had to work hard by hunting animals and whatever was available to feed itself and perhaps a litter of puppies. It was like every dog for himself back then. It is also fortunate that we weren't born yet during those days since there was a good chance we could have been dog food too! Although it's hard tell if we had that kind of a relationship with dogs. For sure though during periods of starvation or other occasions, man actually ate dog meat to fill his needs. During ancient times the animal rights movement wasn't around to stop people from eating dogs, so there was certainly unfortunate dogs that ended up in people's tummies. Thankfully we haven't seemed to have acquired a taste for dog meat since these days dogs are more often than not raised as pets. A hotdog is basically the closest thing that people eat nowadays. Don't worry there is no dog meat in hotdogs, it's made up of another kind of animal, but that's a different nutritional story all together.

As to when man started to domesticate dogs, it is also hard to tell. Did the dog all of a sudden hang around and start following man or did man purposely invite the dog in? Well as they say that's a dog gone question. Another point of interest is when did man start feeding the dog and more importantly on a regular basis?

When this finally happened a large majority of the dog population did not have to go out into the wild to be able to feed themselves and the chances of surviving became much higher. By this time there were also different kinds of dogs that managed to survive the harsh life through the natural selection process but others weren't as lucky.So man and dogs have been very close together (even winding up in people's tummies). While certain dogs are raised for work many are simply kept for companionship. It's seems like pay-back time now, from eating dogs man has made numerous food items targeted specially for dogs to eat. There are different kinds of food for different kinds of dogs and there is also continuous improvement on how to better provide the dog with good nutrition. So you now see many kinds of new dog food products coming out of the market.

It is not only nutrition that matters, for a dog to be healthy, it also needs proper exercise, and good shelter, and should be properly treated. Different kinds of dogs, most notably there size will determine how long they will live. So there are a host of factors to making a dog have a long life and not all of them are within our control, some dogs may just have bad genes. One of the factors that is very much under our control is the food we give our dog. So we should always value proper dog nutrition.
