Different Types of Dog To Choose From
There are many kinds of dogs you can see on the streets. The American Kennel Club (AKC) has a classification of these dogs to better guide us in appreciating them.
One of the more popular dogs that is classified as belonging to the Herding Group is the German Shepherd. These dogs are known for their intelligence and loyalty to their masters. This dog was specifically bred to perform certain tasks. It is a skilled herder yet it is just as popular as a guard dog. The dog is known to be a quick learner and competent at performing it's tasks quite unlike some of our politicians. From working duty a lot of German Shepherds are now mostly raised as pets, yet the fierce loyalty to owner and family is still there. It is also good with children and can adjust to strangers that it doesn't see as threatening. This dog has such a high standard to live up to; it must be tough being a German Shepherd. Other Herding Group dogs include the Belgian Sheepdog, the Belgian Malinosis, the Bearded Collie, and the Shetland Sheepdog.

For dogs in the Hound Group, the Bloodhound is well-known. You must have seen in movies these dogs on leash with deputies hunting down criminals or escape convicts. You can see them smelling the clothes of the criminals to get the criminals scent to track down. You never see them smelling blood first then tracking down the criminals. So it may be best to name these magnificent animals Clotheshounds instead. This is only a suggestion, no harm has been done. Other hounds include the Irish Wolfhound and the Pharaoh Hound. Dogs under this category have assisted man in tracking down animals for food or sport. Some have keen sense of smell while others have very good eye sights.
Another dog grouping is the Terrier Group. Dogs that fall under this category are basically small and can do a fair amount of digging like when it hunts for mice and other small creature hence its name "Terrier" which came from a Latin word denoting "earth". They don't look anything resembling a coal miner, and are actually very pleasant dogs. Dogs include the Jack Russel Terrier, the Norwich Terrier, and the Scottish Terrier.
Then we have the Working Dogs Group. These dogs were meant to assist humans in many work activities like pulling carts, guarding people, and rescuing and searching for people. They are big and sturdy dogs and possess a high degree of intelligence. Dogs included here are the Boxers. This dog's appearance can make some people scared. They are alert dogs, but can be quite friendly and no record whatsoever of being involved in a boxing match. The Great Dane and Doberman Pinscher also belong to this group.
The Utility Group comprise of dogs that can't seem to belong to other dog groupings, since they were also working dogs but are no longer performing their previous functions. Dogs here include the Dalmatian, Akita and Boston Terrier.
The small and cute dogs that you can see around most likely belong to the Toy Group. Most of these dogs can sit comfortably on your lap. Their size are deceiving as they can be effective watchdogs and have surprising amount of energy. Australian Silky Terriers, Chihuahuas and Pekingese belong to this group.
There is also the Sporting Group. Their breeding is for activities like herding game towards the game hunter or retrieving shot animals. Dogs found in this category consists of the American Water Spaniel, the Labrador Retriever and the Pointer among others.
So you at least have an idea of the many types of dogs to choose from and hopefully your ideal best friend can be found.
