Amazing Guitar Tapping - Learn How to Tap on the Guitar

If you have ever heard guitar tapping, you probably wonder how the guitarist is playing so fast. If you have ever seen guitar tapping, it's amazing. Although it's an advanced guitar technique, you can learn this and start incorporating this technique into your play and practice.

Tapping sometimes called finger tapping is when you take your fingertips to produce the notes instead of picking or strumming. If you hit hard enough against the fret and hold the finger there, it will make a sound. When you get the right touch, you can technically be making one sound on each of the six strings all at once.

To tap you need to be plugged into an amp. At first you will probably have a very weak sound and when you tap it actually produces two tones but only one is heard through the amp.

The hammer-on is an very basic example of elementary tapping. A hammer-on is where you play a G, for example, and take another finger and hit up higher to produce an A. That A note was essentially "tapped". But tapping can be done without a resonating note as well. This is a good starting point. If you don't have the strength to do a hammer-on, you probably don't have the strength yet to tap.

To practice tapping take your left hand and start pushing down on the frets to see if you can start producing a sound. Take riffs that you know and use your left hand to completely tap out the whole thing. Use your other hand to help mute the other strings as they can vibrate from the finger tapping.

Once you are comfortable with that, you can move onto two handed tapping. You can bring your right hand over and play notes on the fretboard as well. One good exercise is to play the bass note with the left hand while playing more of the melody or a scale with the right hand. At this point it becomes a lot like a piano where your left and right hands are playing bass and treble.

Take everything that you already know like riffs, scales, and melody lines and start practicing these with your left hand and a combination of left and right hands. Use techniques like hammer-ons and pull-offs to get extra notes in with your playing. The possibilities of what you can write on the guitar with tapping alone are endless.
