Ambleside Outdoor Shops

It is that time of year again when the nights are starting to get a little chilly

, a little darker and most certainly longer.

Many Lake District cottages are in very picturesque locations and you may notice the distinct lack of street lighting! I always have a headtorch in my bag, handy for strolling home from the pub in the dark or a late night walk by the lake.

What this calls for is a ramble around some of the fantastic gear shops of the Lake District to see what they have on offer for Autumn and Winter. Maybe a snuggly soft fleece or a toasty warm down jacket? Or a super new head torch or an exciting GPS gadget?

Ambleside has a fantastic selection of independent gear shops; here is my pick of the best:

Epicentre

Recommended for their unbiased approach to footwear. They are especially good at dispensing fitting advice for crampons and have an extensive climbing range.

Gaynors

A HUGE selection and great for families, Gaynors is spread over several floors and the choice is mind boggling. A veritable Aladdins Cave of outdoor gear.

Adventure Peaks

Part of the trekking and climbing holiday operators with superb climbing wall. They also have a dedicated childrens shop nearby.

The Mountain Factor

Stockists of Paramo and Patagonia. Look out for their sample sales where you can grab a fantastic bargain if you are not picky on colour.

Cunninghams

Paramo, Jack Wolfskin and camping accessories. They have a good boot room upstairs too.

The Climbers Shop

The staff here are experts in almost every outdoor discipline. Whether you are a climber, walker or runner, you can rely on them for impartial advice on big brands like Rab, Mammut and Marmot.

Rohan

Leaders in good quality travel and trekking wear.

Edge of the World

Sells casual outdoor gear like Weird Fish and Joules.

FW Tyson

Footwear specialists, selling Meindl, Mephisto, Lowa and Birkenstock.

Lakes Climber/Lakes Runner

Small specialist shop with a brilliant caff upstairs staffed by outdoor nuts.

Head to the Hills

These guys are the authority on wild swimming. They organise wetsuit tri-on events and can tell you the best places to go once you have made your purchase.

If you fancy a day looking round the shops during your stay at one of the many cottages in the Lake District then make sure Ambleside is on your list to visit. Its a beautiful Lakeland village with stunning surroundings.
