The problem or jaundiced view was further compounded by the fact that the early monitors tended not only to be inaccurate but were also pretty expensive. It was in 2004 that the American Heart Association started championing home blood pressure measurement. This followed on from studies where it was reported that many readings taken by doctors in their surgeries may have been unreliable. This is what has led to home monitoring becoming more generally accepted. There is also the fact the modern monitors are now very accurate as well as being extremely reasonably priced.

When faced with problems in determining the severity or extent of a patients hypertension your doctor may or may not decide to use an ambulatory monitor to give him an accurate picture of your pressure throughout the day. The monitor is attached to a belt at your waist and is connected from there to the cuff around your upper arm. It measures your pressure every 15 to 30 minutes during the day and night. Sometimes it is referred to as a 24 hour blood pressure monitor as that is how long you would normally wear it for. The results are recorded by this machine and then analysed by your doctor. This will help him to see if you have morning surges in pressure, if it varies through the night and if you suffer from white coat hypertension. The results will also tell him if the medication he has placed you on is actually working.

Whilst the apparatus is quite small there can be some minor discomfort when wearing the cuff as it inflates and deflates every 15 minutes or so.

This monitor is used a lot for those who have severe hypertension, particularly with older patients. It determines the average blood pressure during the day and night and is far more informative for your doctor than having to go on just a measurement or two taken whenever you visit him in his surgery.

Ambulatory blood pressures may not be the answer for everyone who suffers from hypertension nor are they necessary for everyone who does suffer but if you do have high blood pressure, in addition to regular visits to your doctor you should be monitoring yourself at home as well.

Wrist blood pressure monitors have been clinically proved to be accurate and reliable and are ideal for home use to and whilst they do not provide as much detail as the ambulatory blood pressure monitors the information they do provide is accurate and reliable.
