For more ancient history visitors can head to Troy, the famous site of the Homer's 'The Iliad' , the site is currently a span of archaeological ruins however many people still arrive here each year.

Istanbul is the only city in the world that stretches onto two continents, both Europe and Asia. The stark contrasts of modernity and tradition are highly visible within the city, with areas of cultural significance next to cosmopolitan shopping areas. Istanbul is named as one of the world best shopping destinations, with a wide range of Western brands to be found within the shopping malls. From the tourist complexes it is possible to walk a short distance and explore some of the old towns, where traditional Turkish culture remains prevalent.

Hierapolis was once a popular spa resort during ancient Roman times, the remains of which still stand today. Many visitors head to Hierapolis to explore the ancient archaeological ruins that have been protected as a UNESCO world heritage site.


Cappadocia is famous for its spectacular geographical formations and has been named as a UNESCO heritage site. The formations were the product of erosion creating natural pillars and columns across the landscape and attack many visitors each year. More historical landmarks can be found in the city of Ephesus, where many Roman and Greek ruins litter the landscape. Ephesus is also home to the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Although many people do head to Turkey for the warm climate and tourist facilities, it is the deep cultural and historical significance of the country that attracts the majority of travellers to explore its intriguing past.
