An Introduction Of Wet Amd

There are two forms of Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

, namely, wet AMD and Dry AMD. Though the former form only takes a ratio about 15%, it can always lead to very serious outcomes.

How is the Wet AMD named? This is because the macula of sufferers is damaged by blood leaked from the blood vessels in the retina.

In fact, there are some other names for wet AMD. Judged from different perspective, their names vary. Based on the vessels in the chorioid layer, it is called Choroidal Neovascularization; based on the fluid in the macula, it is called Exudative macular degeneration. And other names are Subretinal neovascularization and Advanced Macular Degeneration.

Macula is nurtured by some nutrients that are transported by some tissue layers. Retinal Pigment Epithelium is the outer layer. The inner most one is called Bruch's Membrane which can prevent the blood leak in. And another one is called Choroid that provides blood and nutrients to the macula.

When mentioned wet AMD, Choroidal Neovascularization is a frequently emphasized phrase. In fact, it is a synonym of wet AMD. How does it happen? Some problems are occurred in the macula blood vessels. Once the blood vessels are too fragile, some blood will leak into the macula tissues. And the blood will cause some damages onto the macula cells. Consequently, central vision is greatly lost.

Subretinal neovascularization is another name for wet AMD. The name refers to the location of the blood vessels in macula.

Generally, wet AMD can lead to much serious outcomes than dry AMD.
