Several try to play to rapidly without giving themselves time to absorb what is written in front of them, which leads to notes being played improperly and the music not sounding the way that it was originally intended to sound. Slow down are words that I have used more often than any others while teaching students to play a new piece of music.

Another strategy to use when learning to sight read is to only learn a portion of the music at once rather than attempting to play the entire piece when you have just begun to learn it. Dividing music into sections will lead to wonderful success instead of results that you or nobody else are impressed with.
